You'll then see an area where you can set up the parameters for your Advanced Search:

The Field menu presents you with a list of all of the fields within Redtail that you can set up a search for here.  In this post, we'll take a look at the Family Relationship field:

The Family Relationship field can only be used to search contact records with a type of Individual.  You would not want to use it when searching for Business, Association, Trust or Union records, as those types do not have a Family Relationship field.

After selecting "Family Relationship" from the Field menu, your next selection to make is the Operand you want to use with it.  Your available Operands are:

  • Begins With
  • Like
  • Equal To
  • Greater Than
  • Less Than
  • Not Equal To
  • Is Empty (NULL)

We'll show examples of the types of results you might expect from each of these, along with what you might enter in the Criteria box to get at your desired results.

Begins With — This is not a valid Operand with the Family Relationship field.

Like — This is not a valid Operand with the Family Relationship field.
Equal To — Use this when you want to pull up only records with a specific Family Relationship:

This is likely to be a common search you would use with your database, particularly if you run mail merges or labels from within your database.  You can learn more about using the Family Head designation here.

Greater Than / Less Than — These are not valid Operands with the Family Relationship field.

Not Equal To — This is not a valid Operand with the Family Relationship field.

Is Empty (NULL) — This is not a valid Operand with the Family Relationship field.

Note: with any of your Advanced Searches, you can create Tag Groups or Quicklists.  You also have many other options in terms of working with your search results.
