To run an Advanced Search within Redtail, click Search under your Contacts menu:
You'll then see an area where you can set up the parameters for your Advanced Search:
The Field menu presents you with a list of all of the fields within Redtail that you can set up a search for here. In this post, we'll take a look at the Occupation Start Month field:
After selecting "Occupation Start Month" from the Field menu, your next selection to make is the Operand you want to use with it. Your available Operands are:
- Begins With
- Equal To
- Greater Than
- Less Than
- Not Equal To
- Is Empty (NULL)
We'll explain the types of results you might expect from some of these, along with what you might enter in the Criteria box to get at your desired results.
Begins With — this is a valid Operand with the Occupation Start Month field (if you use the numerical equivalent of the month in the Criteria field), but it's easier to use the Equal To Operand with this Field.
Like —this is a valid Operand with the Occupation Start Month field (if you use the numerical equivalent of the month in the Criteria field), but it's easier to use the Equal To Operand with this Field.
Equal To — Use this when you want to pull up all records with a specific Occupation Start Month. You'll want to use it in conjunction with the Occupation Start Year, since using the Occupation Start Month only would return all contacts that have a Occupation Start Month equal to your Criteria, regardless of the year.
This search would return all contacts in your database that have a September of 1969 date entered in their Occupation Start Date field.
Greater Than / Less Than — these Operands can be used to find contacts whose Occupation Start Month falls later or earlier in the year than the month you enter as the Criteria. You must use the numerical equivalent of the month with these Operands. And, to restrict the search results to a specific year, you'll also need to add a second level to your search for the Occupation Start Year.
To find all contacts whose Occupation Start Month is later in the year than April of 2004, you would set this search up as in the below example:
To find all contacts whose Occupation Start Month is earlier in the year than November of 2004, you would set this search up as in the below example:
Note: you can use the AND function after your Criteria box to combine the Greater Than and Less Than Operands in order to find all contacts whose Occupation Start Months fall between two entered Months:
The above search would return only those contacts whose Occupation Start Month is greater than 4 (April) and Less than 11 (November) in 2004, i.e., your results would display those contacts with a Occupation Start Month between May and October of 2004.
Not Equal To — Although you probably wouldn't be too likely to use this Operand with Occupation Start Month, it will allow you to find all contacts who have a Occupation Start Month that is not the month you indicate as your Criteria.
Is Empty (NULL) — Use this Operand to determine which of your contacts do not have a Occupation Start Date entered for their record:
