Advanced Search Field: Tax ID Number

To run an Advanced Search within Redtail, click Search under your Contacts menu:

You'll then see an area where you can set up the parameters for your Advanced Search:

The Field menu presents you with a list of all of the fields within Redtail that you can set up a search for here.  In this post, we'll take a look at the Tax ID Number field:

After selecting "Tax ID Number" from the Field menu, your next selection to make is the Operand you want to use with it.  Your available Operands are:

  • Begins With
  • Like
  • Equal To
  • Greater Than
  • Less Than
  • Not Equal To
  • Is Empty (NULL)

We'll show examples of the types of results you might expect from some of these, along with what you might enter in the Criteria box to get at your desired results.

Begins With — Use this if you need to pull up a list of contacts whose Tax ID Numbers begin with a certain string of numbers:

This search would return all records whose Tax ID Numbers begin with "31."

Like — While it's unlikely you would need to run a "Like" search with Tax ID Numbers, if you did you can use this when you want to pull up a number of records whose Tax ID Numbers contain a specified pattern:

This might prove useful if you have a partial Tax ID Number and are unsure to whom it belongs.  Results for a search such as this might look like the below:

While you can't see the Tax ID Number for your results on the grid, clicking on any of these names will take you to their Overview page where you can then see their Tax ID Number in their Contact Details section.
Note that it does not matter when using the Like Operand where in the Tax ID Number the specified pattern falls, nor does it matter if the pattern is only part of a Tax ID Number.
Equal To — Use this when you want to pull up a record with a specific Tax ID Number:

This search would either display the individual record for whom this is a valid Tax ID Number on your Search results page or, if you've set Search Auto-Redirect to Yes on your Site Preferences page, carry you directly to the contact record.

Greater Than / Less Than — these Operands are unlikely to be used with the Tax ID Number Field.  If you do use them, they will return results that are either greater than or less than your entered Criteria in terms of where they fall in an alphanumeric pattern.

Not Equal To — Using this Operand will return inaccurate results with the Tax ID Number Field.

Is Empty (NULL) — Use this Operand to determine which of your contacts do not have a Tax ID Number entered for their record:

Tax ID Numbers for contacts can be entered from the Contact Details area of their record.

Note: with any of your Advanced Searches, you can create Tag Groups or Quicklists.  You also have many other options in terms of working with your search results.
